Monthly Monday Book Review for August’2014 – Marketing

It’s first Monday of August. Time for Book Review!

Enjoy the Book Review with steaming hot coffee.

Book Name – Marketing

Author –  William Pride and O.C.Ferrell

Official description of the Book

Pride and Ferrell’s MARKETING, combines a thorough overview of essential marketing principles with a visually engaging, reader-friendly presentation. This popular, proven text and a full range of supplemental learning resources (including podcasts, videos, and an interactive marketing plan) provide students with the knowledge and decision making skills they’ll need to succeed in today’s competitive business environment. MARKETING 2010 includes coverage of current marketing strategies and concepts, as well as extensive real-world examples, including material on globalization, customer relationship management, supply chain management, and the latest e-commerce models. The new edition also incorporates important topics drawn from the rapidly changing world of modern business, including social and environmental responsibility, entrepreneurship, and pop culture marketing.

What’s in the Book?

It is divided into 8 parts – Marketing Strategy & Customer Relationship, Environmental Forces, Social & Ethical Responsibilities, Using Information Technology and Target Market Analysis, Customer Behaviour, Product Decision, Distribution Decision, Promotion Decision and Pricing Decision. Each part is further divided into 2 to 3 chapters.

What I liked the most?

  1. I love the fact that a complete part is allotted for Environmental Forces, Social & Ethical Responsibilities. It is true that Green Marketing is highly discussed. But in reality, large space is rarely devoted for this subject.
  2. The next thing I liked the most is that under Green Marketing, they talk about Green Buildings etc. Basically they handle the green marketing subject with respect to the green buildings also. Often times people handle this only from a retail prospective in a Marketing Book.
  3. It is quite impressive because even though the book talks about “Marketing” as such. They have dealt the subject in all angles including responsible marketing, something that is once again rare.
  4. The inclusion of case studies of companies that adapted to “green consumerism” is brilliant
  5. Last but not the least, even though the book talks about every kind of marketing, green marketing and related topics is something that you can find in almost every chapter of this book.

Did you know?

During the year 2010, 5 billion pounds of Polyethylene terephthalate [ PET ] were used in plastic containers and of that only about 1 billion pounds were recycled.

What was the surprise?

Fairmont Resort Hotels serves to three shades of green consumers. One such initiative is offering earth friendly conference meals.

Verse to remember

“I am not a Plastic Bag or Maybe I am Plastic Bag” – Part 7

Crowning glory

On that note, every story is great and there is no differing opinion on that.

But, the greatest, the most beautiful and the most impressive of all is “Promotions Decision”

This Chapter features Creative Director Anita Ahuja as Bag Lady and talks about her tote named ” I am a Plastic Bag”

Monthly Monday Book Review for July’2014 – Fashion & its Social Agenda

It’s first Monday of July. Time for Book Review!

Enjoy the Book Review with steaming hot coffee.

Book Name – Fashion & its Social Agenda

Author –  Diana Crane

Official description of the Book

It has long been said that clothes make the man (or woman), but is it still true today? If so, how has the information clothes convey changed over the years? Using a wide range of historical and contemporary materials, Diana Crane demonstrates how the social significance of clothing has been transformed.

Crane compares nineteenth-century societies—France and the United States—where social class was the most salient aspect of social identity signified in clothing with late twentieth-century America, where lifestyle, gender, sexual orientation, age, and ethnicity are more meaningful to individuals in constructing their wardrobes. Today, clothes worn at work signify social class, but leisure clothes convey meanings ranging from trite to political. In today’s multicode societies, clothes inhibit as well as facilitate communication between highly fragmented social groups.

Crane extends her comparison by showing how nineteenth-century French designers created fashions that suited lifestyles of Paris elites but that were also widely adopted outside France. By contrast, today’s designers operate in a global marketplace, shaped by television, film, and popular music. No longer confined to elites, trendsetters are drawn from many social groups, and most trends have short trajectories. To assess the impact of fashion on women, Crane uses voices of college-aged and middle-aged women who took part in focus groups. These discussions yield fascinating information about women’s perceptions of female identity and sexuality in the fashion industry.

An absorbing work, Fashion and Its Social Agendas stands out as a critical study of gender, fashion, and consumer culture.

What’s in the Book?

It is divided into 8 Chapters – Fashion, Identity and Social Change, Working Class Clothing and the Experience of Social Class in the 19th Century, Fashion Democratization & Social Control, Women’s Clothing Behavior as Non-Verbal Resistance ; Symbolic Boundaries, Alternate Dress & Public Space, Fashion Worlds & Global Markets from “class” to “consumer” fashion, Men’s Clothing & Construction of Masculine Identities ; Class, lifestyle and Popular Culture, Fashion Images & Struggles for Women’s Identity, Fashion & Clothing Choices in 2 centuries.

What I liked the most?

  1. I love the fact that the book is presented chronologically. Since the book talks about fashion even during Industrial Revolution, this chronological documentation helps someone like  a 21 year old understand better.
  2. The next thing I liked the most in this book is “Appendix” (Very Strange, but True). It features Questionnaires for the reader and  focus groups like Fashion Designer. If you really answer those questions and could find a focus group partner, then for sure your whole idea of fashion will change completely.
  3. It is quite impressive because even though the book talks about Fashion it also presents lot of statistics like Income statistics etc. Well, Creativity + Technicality.
  4. The inclusion of history is brilliant. The core idea of book is “fashion”. But the history gives a whole different perspective
  5. Last but not the least, upon reading the book, every word in the book will make you think and breathe Fashion/Clothing and equally about Social Class/Structure.

Did you know?

During 19th century, suit purchased by the Middle Class men for the wedding is expected to last life time and serve variety of purposes like Sunday Church Serve, Wedding and Funerals. All this in France, very own Fashion Capital.

What was the surprise?

Clothes were relatively unavailable for working class & Fashion were created for Upper Class.

Verse to remember

“At any moment, a servant may become Master” – Chapter 7

Crowning glory

Every girl loves to own all fashion brands in the world. But there is this special dress that she loves to wear on very special occasion.

On that note, every story is great and there is no differing opinion on that.

But, the greatest, the most beautiful and the most impressive of all is “Working Class Clothing and Social Class”

This Chapter features the Dress Designs and Ideologies behind those designs in France in 19th century. It is quite interesting to read and see how far we have evolved.

So, have you read this book? If yes, were our views different?

Monthly Monday Book Review for June’2014 – Business Ethics: A Critical Approach: Integrating Ethics Across the Business .

It’s first Monday of June. Time for Book Review!

Enjoy the Book Review with steaming hot coffee.

Book Name – Business Ethics: A Critical Approach: Integrating Ethics Across the Business

Edited by –  Patrick O’Sullivan, Mark Smith, Mark Esposito

Official description of the Book

Events such as Trafigura’s illegal dumping of toxic waste in Côte d’Ivoire and BP’s environmentally disastrous oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico have highlighted ethical issues in international business at a time when business leaders, academics and business schools were reflecting on their own responsibilities following the global financial crisis. The scope and scale of the global operations of multinational businesses means that decisions taken in different parts of the world have far reaching consequences beyond the national settings where employees are located or where firms are registered and as such, an awareness of these responsibilities needs to be integrated into all levels and all subjects.

Using four guiding principles – a critical multilevel approach rooted in the tradition of European social theory, a comparative and international perspective, a global rather than just a European or American stand point and engaging with subject-specific issues this book aims to ‘mainstream’ business ethics into the work of teachers and students in business schools. This comprehensive volume brings together contributions from a range of experts in different areas of business studies thereby facilitating and encouraging a move away from business ethics being a box to be ticked to being an integrated consideration across the business disciplines.

This impressive book brings ethical considerations back to the heart of the business curriculum and in doing so, provides a companion for the progressive business student throughout their university career.

What’s in the Book?

It is divided into 7 parts – Introduction, Organizational Strategy, Finance and Economics, Organizational Behavior, Marketing & Innovation, HRM & Employee relations and the ethical future. Except the Introduction and ethical future, all others parts talk about role of ethics in that particular business area.

What I liked the most?

  1. I love the fact that the book is presented as business cases and moral questions each of those cases arise. And this is brilliant considering the book is about ethics.
  2. The next thing I liked the most is that the book features a chapter on Conserve India. They have told the entire story of Conserve India in that 1 single chapter. It gives answers for so many Q we keep getting.
  3. It is quite impressive because even though the book talks about ethics book they variety in terms of business. The take about oil industry (bp), fashion or social issues (conserve India), software (apple computers) etc.
  4. The inclusion of pictures is brilliant. The core idea of book is “ethics” or theory. But the addition of pictures makes it even more interesting and gives a different twist to theory
  5. Last but not the least, upon reading the book, every word in the book will make you think and act ethically regardless of your moral values.

Did you know?

Monthly Monday Book Review for May ‘2014 – Textile Designers at the Cutting edge – Bradley Quinn

It’s first Monday of May. Time for Book Review!

Enjoy the Book Review with steaming hot coffee.

Book Name – Textile Designers at the Cutting Edge

Author – Bradley Quinn

Official description of the Book

Featuring designers chosen for their contributions to fashion textiles and interior fabrics, the book showcases today’s most forward-thinking and exciting work that signals new directions in textile practice and the emergence of new textile forms and fiber technologies. Whether speaking from style capitals, such as London, Paris, Milan, Madrid, Berlin, Tokyo, and New York, or in less-trafficked cities, the designers describe their output and inspirations in their own words. The book not only features images of completed designs, but also previously unseen archive material, such as work-in-progress photographs and digital drawings. These unique visuals create a stylish picture of today’s textiles, as well as an essential reference guide for those interested in contemporary textile design.”

What’s in the Book?

It is divided into the following sections –Part 1 – Body: Fabric as Second Skin, Part 2 – Space: Fabric as Structure and Form, These sections are further divided into sub-titles. Every section features tons of designers. The text is supported by color photographs that make the book quite attractive

What I liked the most?

  1. I love the fact that the author groups the designers based on their textile forte like the ones who stresses importance on texture, one who emphasizes structure and form etc.
  2. The next thing I liked the most is – Designers from fashion capitals like London, Paris share the space with small town designers in this book. Well, this is something that does not happen so much in reality. It features 36 varied designers from 16 countries around the world.
  3. It is quite impressive because this book is not like a conventional textile knowledge source, it goes one step further by being an inspiration, so was the innovation of the few designers
  4. The inclusion of pictures and contact information is brilliant. But more than that, the interview gives a glimpse of thought process of all the designers. Well, these thought process have the potential to inspire and generate new designers.
  5. Last but not the least, trust me every word in the book will create fascination for textiles rather than fashion and make you realize after all textiles are the life-blood of fashion

Did you know?

Thermochromatic dyes? UV-Activated motifs? Photochromatic motifs? All these are showcased in this book.

What was the surprise?

“In Netherlands, textiles are forging new relationship with architecture and landscape design”

Book Name – Make the Impossible Possible

Author – Bill Strickland with Vince Rause

One man’s crusade to inspire others to dream bigger and achieve the extraordinary!!

What’s in the Book?

It is divided into 10 chapters – From the ghetto to Harvard Business School, growing up, a dream is born, expanding our mission, the secret to success, impossibility thinking, the power of passion, swing, reach and purpose. The organization of the book is very smart. It starts with a very inspirational stuff to create a curiosity. But from the immediate next chapter it starts with the baby step and gradually proceeds to the empowerment and then finally achievement.

What I liked the most?

  1. I love the fact that the author starts off with Chapter name “From the Ghetto to Harvard Business School”. It makes it motivating and inspirational.
  2. The next thing I liked the most is – the author’s stories of his interaction with people of different social strata are quite interesting. Not everyone can adapt and mix equally with folks of all social strata.
  3. It is quite impressive because the author returns to the moment he met his art teacher at almost every part of the book. It is quite important to remember where / who helped us get started.
  4. The approach of author’s job training center is itself a very good example of Social Entrepreneurship. They have training center in different parts of United States and each of those cater to the needs of the specific community.
  5. Last but not the least, trust me every word in the book will create motivate and inspire you to achieve against all odds.

Crowning glory

It is a self-development book telling you to make the impossible possible. But often times, the very first thought in a difficult situation will be – I am not a genius to solve this or fix this. The crowning glory is undoubtedly the definition of genius by Mr. Strickland.

“But genius is not the same thing as IQ or talent. It’s not something you’re born with. It’s not something you are. Genius is something you discover. We all have access to genius. It runs through our lives like a vein of gold. The people we call ‘geniuses’ have found a way to tap this vein and use the power of their own potential to do remarkable things.”

“Eight years ago, Stacey Edgar had a $2,000 tax return and a deep desire to help provide economic security for women in need. She knew that of the 1.3 billion people living on less than $1 per day, seventy percent are women. What she didn’t have was a business plan. Or a passport. But that didn’t stop her from creating a socially conscious business that has helped poor women in five continents feed their families and send their children to school.

Global Girlfriends is Stacey’s inspiring story of following her convictions, interwoven with the stories of her colleagues and friends–real women all over the world, from Guatemala to Nepal, from Haiti to Uganda. It is also a passionate argument for simple actions we can all take to eliminate extreme poverty.”

The book starts with the Introduction – No Passport Required. It continues with Peace Corps Reject and goes through many destinations of fair trade social enterprises. The journey ends with Afterword and Beyond.

What I liked the most?

1) Most of the chapters recount author’s travels to meet with the people making the products that are sold at http://www.globalgirlfriend.com/store/ggf/site . This kind of story telling makes it super interesting.

2) As you move forward, it also documents the successful development of the business with those folks she met during the travel. This approach makes it lot more interesting to continue reading.

3) During the start phase, author doesn’t know much about business. Author’s approach of sharing her fears and successes, her hesitations and greatest ideas acts like a confidence boost for any women planning to get into the venture.

4) Also, the epilogue, ‘Afterward: And Beyond’ lays out all the resources you need to follow a passion to help women and bring them out of poverty. This account of pointers feels like you have come one big round.

Textile Futures highlights recent works from key practitioners and examines the changing role of textiles. Recent developments present new technical possibilities that are beginning to redefine textiles as a uniquely multidisciplinary field of innovation and research. This book is an important tool for any textile practitioner, fashion designer, architect, interior designer or student designer interested in following new developments in the field of textiles, seeking new sustainable sources, or just eager to discover new works that reveal the potency of textiles as an ultra material.

What I liked the most?

  1. I love the fact that the author groups the textile materials by function and assess their significance and future trends in the field
  2. The next thing I liked the most is – this book not only talks about the current textile materials that are already in the market, but also introduces the readers to many textile innovations the future may hold.
  3. It is quite impressive because the author explains all the textile related terminology in layman’s language. Yes, you heard it right, no jargon
  4. My portfolio is sustainability. So any information in this domain is quite interesting to me. The amazing fact of this book is that, though it has lot of theory for specialized majors, it is presented in such a remarkable manner that almost everyone regardless of their background can enjoy this book.
  5. The inclusion of major researchers, artists, and companies working on the written subject matter is adorable. It basically helps the readers to find out more in-depth information about their interest area.
  6. Last but not the least, trust me every word in the book will create fascination for textiles and fashion.

Did you know?

Wearable vitamins? Art made of knitted textiles? Textiles that sense and alert you to environmental toxins? All these are showcased in this book.

What was the surprise?

The Lifesuit that allows even paralyzed people to walk was a real surprise for me. I adore it even more as it has social good component to it.

Monthly Monday Book Review for January’14 – I have a Dream – Rashmi Bansal

Sun started smiling with its sunshine! So, the wait is over.

Enjoy the Book Review with steaming hot coffee.

Book Name – I have a Dream

 Author – Rashmi Bansal

Official description of the Book

“I Have A Dream” is the story of 20 idealists who think and act like entrepreneurs.

They are committed to different causes, but they have one thing in common: a belief that principles of management can and must be used to achieve a greater common good.

These stories say one thing loud and clear change starts with one person, and that person could be someone next door. Someone like you

What’s in the Book?

It is divided into 3 sections – Rainmakers, Change makers and Spiritual Capitalist

Rainmakers

This section includes a collection of social enterprise that generate revenue but whose primary motive is not profit

It includes stories of Sulabh international, Conserve India (Yippee! We were featured), Aavishkaar social venture fund, Rangsutra, Desicrew, Spiti ecosphere, SELCO, Pipal tree, Project Chilika, Super 30, Mirakle Couriers,

Change makers

This section includes profile of those who believed that it just takes a single person to start a movement

It includes stories of Pratham, Goonj, Association for Democratic Reforms, Akanksha, Parivartan, Blind Person’s Association,

The Spiritual Capitalist

This section includes profile of individuals who chose to live by the principle of ideal service and believe in purity of purpose and selflessness.

It includes stories of Akshaya Patra, Parivaar Ashram, Belur Math,

What I liked the most ?

  1. On a serious note, let’s start from the Prologue. I really love these verses – “principles of management can and must be used to achieve a greater common good. “ It strikes a chord. It is a real food for thought for many aspiring B-School students.
  2. The next thing I liked the best is the way in which the book is organized. First, it showcases a definition of her categorization followed by the brief individual profile of everyone under that category. It’s more like a curtain raiser. All these make it very user friendly.
  3. Further, those 3 different categories gives a feel that there is something for everyone. We all like to do some social good. But, the route we like to take may be different. For some profit doesn’t matter, when it comes to social good. There are people out there who believe it just takes 1 to start a movement. While there are others who believe in ideal service for the social good! Regardless of your route to social good, “I have a dream – Rashmi Bansal” will offer you something.
  4. The scattered Hindi Lingo was a fresh change and made me say – “Hey, I am reading a creation of Indian”
  5. Last but not the least, trust me every story will inspire you to do some common good.

Did you know?

Honorable Mr. Arvind Kejriwal is also featured in the book. You can read about him under the title “Into that Heaven of Freedom”. It showcases the movement ‘Parivartan’

What was the surprise?

I am aware of so many ‘Ivy League Wall Street went on to become monk”. All those IIT folks in spiritualist capital were real surprise for me.

Verse to remember

“When corporates do CSR, it is their last priority. But, when fair trade companies or NGO’s take up marketing programs, then fairness is the top-most priority. That is the difference.” – Rags to Riches, I have a Dream – Rashmi Bansal

Crowning glory

A kid never says no to candy, but there is always this special candy that he/she wants for every Birthday. We may relish every cuisine around the world, but homemade with mom’s love is the ultimate joy.

On that note, every story is great and there is no differing opinion on that.

But, the greatest, the most beautiful and the most impressive of all is “RAGS TO RICHES”

The title “RAGS TO RICHES” features the story of Conserve India and our visionary Anita Ahuja.
